[IT] La terza edizione di @yeastphotofestival parla anche di storie che celebrano la resistenza indigena alla devastazione dell’ecosistema, come “The Forest Knows” di @nico_lanfranchi, progetto realizzato in collaborazione con @davilsonbr grazie a @fondazionegiordano e @abocait ,con il contributo di Comune di Racale e in collaborazione con @otmcompany.

È la vicenda del popolo Asháninka del villaggio di Apiwtxa, narrata attraverso gli scatti di Lanfranchi esposti nella chiesa di @santamarialanovaracale. I fondatori del villaggio, i fratelli Piyãko, hanno piantato milioni di alberi, lottando per preservare il territorio e la cultura degli Asháninka.

Un impegno che ha permesso di trasformare terre un tempo devastate in una rigogliosa foresta ricca di cibo, frutta e piante medicinali. Il villaggio di Apiwtxa ha così raggiunto la sicurezza alimentare e l’autonomia, e il suo popolo ha potuto mantenere un equilibrio tra il loro stile di vita, la loro cultura e la modernità.

Another shot from the project ‘the forest knows’, on show until 4 November at the @yeastphotofestival .Sunrise on the Amônia River: every day, at first light, a mist rises from the river and the forest, enveloping everything and then thinning out with the light of the sun. Flying rivers - are a kind of invisible watercourse that circulates through the atmosphere. It is the moisture generated in the Amazon rainforest that meets the barrier of the Andes Mountains of over 4,000 metres and disperses with the winds throughout the South American continent.Flying rivers contribute directly to the formation of the headwaters of the watercourses that form the great Amazon. It is estimated that the flow of the flying rivers is equal to or greater than that of the Amazon, which is the largest in the world and carries 200,000 cubic metres of water per second. Flying rivers are of fundamental importance for the well-being of society, as well as being responsible for Brazil’s agri-food economy. This phenomenon is responsible for the balance of climate and biodiversity, as well as for ecosystem services that are fundamental to the survival of the entire continent. What can be seen in this phenomenon is the importance of the conservation and recovery of the Amazon Rainforest.

[EN] Açai is the fruit of a palm tree that only grows in very wet or flooded soil. It forms in clusters, is spherical in shape and is mainly cultivated in the Amazon region. It has become popular both nationally and internationally, considered a superfood source of good fats, antioxidants, proteins, vitamins and minerals. For the Asháninka, people who live in this region, this is an inevitable part of their daily diet.

“The Forest Knows” è la storia del popolo Asháninka del villaggio di Apiwtxa, nell’Acre (Brasile) fondato dai fratelli Piyãko, visionari del nostro tempo. Benki Piyãko, uno degli otto fratelli, sciamano e attivista ambientale, ha portato avanti un’azione di rimboschimento dell’Amazzonia, piantando milioni di alberi e lottando per preservare il territorio e la cultura degli Asháninka, coinvolgendo organizzazioni internazionali, star di Hollywood e semplici cittadini.

@nico_lanfranchi (1976, Milano Italia) vive tra Berlino e Milano. Negli ultimi anni ha condotto ricerche su temi legati all’ambiente, alla migrazione e ai diritti dei popoli indigeni per ONG.

Aldeia Apiwtxa, March 2023, a Kayapo ethnic warrior named Flechas Kawatum (54 years old), with traditional body paintings of his people and handmade bead ornaments, pictured during a cultural exchange that took place in March 2023, which brought a delegation from the Kayapo people of Mato Grosso to visit the Apiwtxa village, to learn first-hand about the daily life and agroforestry and reforestation work of the Ashaninka people in this indigenous reserve, which has become an example and model for other indigenous communities to follow. Eliane Yawanawá, wife of the leader Francisco Piyako, holds a fruit called Biribá in her hands. Eliane belongs to the Yawanawá people, she is a craftswoman and makes clothes with designs of the butterfly (Yawavana) and the boa (Runüa), signs of protection and wisdom received from the spiritual world through the sacred medicine Kamárampi. As I approached with bated breath this weeping mother, I could not help but think of all the people I too have lost, of the unbearable pain of death, and of the nonsense of dying like this and losing someone for principles and causes that are above life, love and one's own dreams.
We lose a colleague today in Irpin, Brent Renaud, killed by a Russian sniper probably. I did not know him, with the cold inside my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Coming out of my shell, after almost two years of drowsiness to heal some hidden wounds...a look back in my archive among the stories that I photographed, of real wounds that bring me back down to earth. I'm thinking in these days obviously to the war around the corner, to the refugees who leave their homes, and to the non Ukrainians who are absurdly discriminated at the borders with Europe. I think of the desperation of losing a home, a loved one, a dream that who knows how long it will have to wait to come true... a desperation that has no color, race, age, capable of leaving deep marks in the soul, that should bring us closer instead of distancing us. "I am also what I see", that's what I tell myself every time I tiptoe into the world through my camera.

Here we are in Haiti, right after Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Prayer in the Église de Dieu, a Protestant church in Pointe Sable.
